Abstract
1,093,478. Discharging molten metals. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. April 20, 1966 [May 6, 1965], No. 17355/66. Heading F4B. A refractory lined degassing ladle 10 or a tundish has its discharge nozzle 12 obturated by a refractory slide 15 actuated by the piston of a fluid motor (26) and held against the nozzle face 14 by spring-pressed, pivoted levers 42, said slide being formed with an opening 19 of the same diameter as nozzle 12 and a smaller discharge nozzle (17) spaced from and in line with said opening 19. Levers 42 are urged by springs 47 against metal lugs 22 welded to angles 21 on the slide 15, said levers having recesses 52 receiving rods 53 welded to plates 54 carrying graphite pads 55 contacting lugs 22. Opening 19 is only lined up with nozzle 12 when vessel 10 is empty to permit preheating of the same. A rod 56 supported by lugs 57 from the ladle base-plate 40 acts as a limit stop for the slide 15. Several slides 15 may be disposed apart and in line for ease of replacement, Figs. 4-7 (not shown).
