Abstract

A lubricant comprises a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil having a viscosity of 3-22 cS at 210 DEG F. and a VI of at least 35, 0.1-10 wt. per cent of an oil soluble copolymer having at least one hydroxy group and first ester groups derived from an alkenoic acid and a C4-C30 alkanol and second ester groups derived from an alkenoic acid and an alkanpolyol and 0.1-10 wt. per cent of a reaction product of a polyamine of general formula <FORM:1092847/C4-C5/1> where R1 and R2 are alkylene or alkyl substituted alkylene radicals containing up to 7 carbon atoms; R3 and R4 are hydrogen, C1-C7 alkyl or amino substituted alkyl groups, the amino substituents including alkylene diamines or poly C2-C7 alkylene polyamines and n is 0-5, with a succinic acid or functional derivative thereof having a C30-C20 aliphatic hydrocarbon substituent on an alpha carbon atom. Copolymers specified are copolymers of lauryl methacrylate, stearyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate or the copolymer formed by reacting a copolymer of lauryl methacrylate, stearyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid with ethylene oxide. The composition may also contain 0.5-10% of a metal salt of a salicylic acid, e.g. a calcium salt of a C12-C22 alkyl or dialkyl salicylic acid, and up to 0.5% of a zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate.
