Abstract
1,092,720. Making pistons. TRW Inc. July 7, 1966, No. 30652/66. Heading B3A. A method of making piston comprises forming a piston blank having a head, a depending skirt and a pair of opposed pin bosses in the skirt, forming an open top annular groove in the head, inserting therein a core ring shaped to the size of a desired oil gallery, upsetting the piston head to close the groove, forming a weld bond to close the groove, drilling a drainage hole from the closed groove to the interior of the skirt and removing the core material therethrough. The piston blank may be forged from a high silicon content aluminium alloy to provide a ridge 24 in which is machined a groove 29. A core ring 32, preferably of zinc or an alloy thereof and coated with a refractory material, is inserted in the groove and the ridge 24 is upset to form a flat crown 22a. A V- groove 39 is machined along the junction line formed in the crown and filled with weld material 41. Finally holes 44 are drilled and the core ring is melted and drained therethrough during heat treatment of the piston. The oil gallery 43 may be cleaned by flushing with a nitric acid solution. When using an easily forged aluminium alloy the groove 39 may be formed in the initial forging step. The groove (67) may be of triangular cross-section in which case an upstanding cylindrical projection (66) within the inner circumference of the groove is forged so as to close the groove and form the piston crown, Figs. 11, 12 (not shown). The junction line (79) extends radially outwardly and the weld material is deposited in a circumferential groove (34) in the side of the piston head. In a further embodiment, the triangular shape of the groove is modified and a back-up ring 161 is fitted into the groove with the core ring. The V-groove 162 may extend into the outer circumference of the ring 161. Alternatively the back-up ring may extend along the vertical side wall of the groove or partially along this wall and along the top of the groove, Figs. 20, 21 (not shown).
