Abstract
1,092,636. Stoppers for tubes. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS Ltd. Feb. 15, 1965 [April 30, 1964], No. 18052/64. Heading F2P. A device for sealing a pipe-end against internal pressure has a member 20 sealingly engaging the inner surface of the pipe and means 12, 14 for engaging the outer surface of the pipe to resist dislodgement. As shown in Fig. 4 the device has compression studs 5 connecting end plates 21 and 22, between which a tubular rubber sealing member 20 is supported. The studs 5 can move freely through the plate 21 but their ends are screwed into the plate 22. Springs 25 on the studs resist displacement of the plate 22 due to pressure in the pipe so that the sealing effect of the tube 20 is built up gradually. The plate 21 has a flange 21 onto which is screwed an externally knurled ring 12 which engages behind a split clamping ring 14 removably secured on the outside of the pipe (Figs. 2a and 2b, not shown). Alternatively the flange 21, and rings 21 and 14 may be omitted and two U-shaped metal strips brazed onto the outside of the plate 22 each with its legs laying at opposite characters along the length of the outside of the pipe, to which these legs are clamped by pipe-clips. (Fig. 3, not shown). Alternatively to the tube 20 of Fig. 4 the space between the plates 21, 21 (which for this purpose are made considerably thinner) is filled with a resilient cylindrical block.
