Abstract

1,092,633. Welding by pressure; making finned tubes. TUBE PRODUCTS Ltd. Jan. 7, 1965 [March 20, 1964; Sept. 8, 1964], Nos. 11803/64 and 36683/64. Headings B3A and B3R. In continuously welding a straight longitudinal or helical fin to the surface of a tube by electric resistance welding, the edge of the fin which is applied to the surface is shaped to provide one or more sharp or narrow ribs or crests which are continuous and engage the surface of the tube initially so that the heating effect of the current is initially concentrated in the ribs or crests. The fin may have a chamfered end to provide a single welding edge and two such fins 15, 16, Fig. 3, may be welded to a tube 17 by a pair of grooved roller electrodes 18, 19. The current flow is from one electrode through the tube to the other electrode. The fin may be of greater radial length with a blunt edge remote from the edge to be welded. The inner edge of the fin 29, Fig. 7, may have two parallel crests, separated by a groove and the crests may be knife edged, may have narrow lands or may be radiused. More than two crests may be provided and they may lie on a curve or in a flat plane. Instead of supplying current through the grooved rollers the current may be supplied to the sides of the fin through separate roller electrodes 32 or sliding contacts. Opposed fins may be wound helically on a tube and welded by grooved roller electrode inclined to the tube axis and the rollers may be idle or driven. Opposed straight longitudinal fins may be welded to a tube by grooved driven roller electrodes. In making a tube plate opposed fins are welded to tubes and the outer edges of the fins are welded together. Alternatively a number of tubes each having one fin welded by the described method are formed and the free edge of each fin is welded to the unfinned side of the adjacent tube.
