Abstract

1,092,504. Acrylonitrile polymer filaments. ROHM & HAAS CO. March 8,1965 [March 12, 1964], No. 9748/65. Heading B5B. A continuous'shaped article, e.g. a filament or film, is made from an aqueous dispersion of a polymer containing at least 50% by weight acrylonitrile (and preferably at least 85%) and which is in the form of discrete particles dispersed by means of an acid-sensitive dispersant which loses its dispersing capacity in an acidic medium, by extruding the aqueous dispersion into an aqueous acidic bath at 70-90‹ C. and containing a rapidly-diffusing acid and a solvating agent for the polymer so as to form a shaped, partly-coalesced article and then contacting said partly coalesced article with an aqueous coalescing solution for the polymer for sufficient time to provide a shaped article coalesced sufficiently for subsequent drawing. A " rapidly diffusing acid " is defined as either nitric acid of 40 to 45% by weight concentration or hydrochloric acid of 10 to 37% by weight concentration. The solvating agent is defined as either nitric acid of 40 to 45% by weight concentration (i.e. the nitric acid also functions as solvating agent), or, where hydrochloric acid is used as the rapidly-diffusing acid, or any of:-20 to 50% by weight sulphuric acid, water-soluble thiocyanates, iodides, bromides and chlorides of Group I and II metals of atomic numbers 3 to 48, or compatible mixtures of these salts. Preferably the polymer particles are less than about 1 micron in size, and the polymer dispersion is prepared by emulsion polymerization using an acid-sensitive emulsifying agent. The aqueous coalescing bath may contain any of the solvating agents used in the coagulating bath but at higher concentrations, e.g. 50 to 60% by weight nitric acid, where the aqueous acidic bath is 40 to 45% by weight nitric acid and the solvating agent used must be compatible with the components of the coagulating bath. Where a solvating acid, e.g. 55-60% by weight nitric acid or 70- 98% by weight sulphuric acid is used, the coalescing bath is preferably held at room temperature. Lower concentrations of the solvating agent may be used at elevated temperatures, e.g. 50-55% by weight nitric acid at 50- 60‹ C. bath temperature. Elevated temperatures are also preferred where inorganic salts are used as solvating agents in the coalescing bath. On leaving the coalescing bath the articles may be stretched, e.g. in a hot water washing bath, or, after washing, in hot water, or in steam, or in the dry state.
