Abstract
109,248. Quack, C. M. A. Aug. 29, 1916, [Convention date]. Addition to 102,144. Targets.-To prevent the target from being released by a gust of wind, a screen to be pierced by the bullet is provided, through which the silhouette can be seen, and which is worked against wind pressure but falls forward with the struck target. The rocking beam 29 carrying the wind-screen is on the same axis 4 as the target and carries by means of a pivot 30 a gravity latch 36 which normally, by means of a curvednotch 34, engages a pin 37 between ears on the cross-stay 27, which is notched from below to accommodate the catch. A gust of wind does not shake this latch free, but on the target tipping forward, a lever 38 on its beam turns the latch clear of the pin 37, and the wind-carrier tips also, lugs 39, 40 on the two beams coming into contact. Owing to these lugs, when the target is righted, the wind-screen is also righted, and the latch re-engages, the lug 40 parting slightly from the lug 39. A screw 44 feeding into the notch 34 varies the available depth of the notch. A peg 31 supports the latch from below, and a stop 33 prevents an excessive swing. The latch is provided with an eye 32 adapted to receive a pin for setting the latch out of action on a windless day.
