Abstract
The invention comprises adducts having a hydroxyl number between 30 and 800 of a mixture of glycerol and pentaerythritol in a molar ratio of 1:5 to 5:1 and a halogen containing epoxide of the formula <FORM:1092114/C3/1> wherein X is chlorine, bromine or fluorine or mixtures thereof and n is 0-5, as well as polyurethanes derived therefrom. The adducts are prepared by reacting the three compounds in the presence of a Lewis acid. The polyethers may be reacted with organic polyisocyanates in an amount of at least 0.7 NCO groups based on the number of hydroxyl groups present in the presence of a foaming agent, catalyst and surfactant to produce polyurethanes. The foaming agent may be water, a halogenated hydrocarbon or mixtures thereof. The catalyst may be a tertiary amine or a metallic salt. The surfactant may be a silicone oil or soap. Further additives which may be included are acids, hydroxy compounds, polyesters, fillers, dyes, fibrous material, plasticizers, deodorants and antioxidants. Examples refer to adducts of 4,4,4-trichlorobutylene oxide which are reacted with tolylene diisocyanate and polyphenylene polymethylene isocyanate.ALSO:The invention comprises adducts having a hydroxyl number between 30 and 800 of glycerol and pentaerythritol in a molar ratio of from 1:5 to 5:1 with a halogen containing epoxide of the formula <FORM:1092114/C2/1> wherein X is chlorine, fluorine or bromine or mixtures thereof, and n is 0-5. The adducts are prepared by reacting the three compounds in the presence of a Lewis acid, e.g. a halide of boron or a complex thereof, a halide of aluminium, titanium, tin, iron or an acidic clay. The examples refer to adducts of 4,4,4-trichlorobutylene oxide.
