Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1091949/C2/1> wherein Ar represents a phenylene, naphthylene or biphenylene radical or a radical <FORM:1091949/C2/2> where Y is a methylene, sulphone, O or S linkage and in which each Ar may be substituted by a C1- 8 alkyl group, C1- 4 alkoxy group, C1- 4 thioalkyl group, a cyano, C1- 4 carbalkoxy or chlorine or bromine groups; Z represents a straight- or branched-chain C1- 10 alkylene radical in which one or more methylene groups may be replaced by O or S or a carboxylic ester linkage; and x is 1 or 2. The compounds are made by reducing the nitro compounds of the formula <FORM:1091949/C2/3> in water or organic solvents at 20-180 DEG C. to the corresponding amines and reacting the latter with phosgene in a known manner. The nitro compounds may be reduced catalytically or using Fe/HCl, Sn/HCl, Sn/acetic acid reducing agents. Phosgenation may be effected using the cold phase-hot phase system or by reacting the amine hydrochloride with phosgene. Numerous examples are provided.
