Abstract

1,089,987. Electromagnetic disc brakes. SOCIETE INDUSTRIELLE DE MATERIAL ELECTROMAGNETIQUE " S.I.M.E." SOC. ANON. Nov. 10, 1965 [Nov. 13, 1964], No. 47698/65. Heading F2E. An electromagnetic disc brake consists of an axially fixed disc 10 which is braked by a pair of opposed pads 14, 15 slidable on pins 13 which are a fairly tight fit in lugs 12 of a fixed bracket (11) (Figs. 1 and 2, not shown) such that they can slide relative to the lugs but only when, as a result of wear of the linings 16, 17, the energizing force of an electromagnet 24, 25, 26, which withdraws the pads against the force of brakeapplying springs 18, is caused to act on the pins via collars 23 formed on the latter and engageable with the pad 15, the arrangement being such that the spacings between each of the pads and the disc with the electromagnet energized remain equal as the linings wear. The magnet yoke 24 is secured to a part 19 which is also slidable on the pins 13 and is connected with the pad 14 by tie rods 20 of adjustable effective length. The magnet armature 26 is connected via a pivot including a resilient bush 27 to the pad 15, any pivoting of the pad 15 being controlled by buffers 28. The relative positions of the pads in the release position of the brake is fixed by the separation between the collar 23 on each pin 13 and an adjustable stop 29 on the end of each pin adjacent the pad 14, a recessed washer 21 being disposed around the collar 23 on each rod for abutment by the respective spring 18 so that, on release of the electromagnet, the spring is able to act on the pad 15 without the washer 21 contacting the collar 23, and also to act equally on the pad 14 via the part 19 and tie-rods 20, so that equal clearances occur between the collar 23 and pad 15, and between the stop 29 and pad 14, when the linings 16, 17 are engaging the disc. The brake may include a second assembly identical to that shown, which may be a mirror image of the bracket of Fig. 1 (not shown), whereby the disc is engaged by two pairs of pads spaced circumferentially 90 degrees apart.
