Abstract

Slings; transporting goods in two or more operations without removing slings. -- A sling for transferring by means of a crane a bundle of packages, such as sacks, boxes, bags, &c., is so formed that it will remain in position around the bundle when removed from the crane hook. For this purpose, the ends of a rope which are passed through a loop b, Fig. 2, are held by a device which gives a short grip, consisting of a metal body o, Fig. 3, with an eye p to engage the crane hook f<1> and a spring-pressed wedge to clamp the two parts of the rope. In another form of sling, the loop b of the rope is fitted with a tapered metal piece which grips the rope passed through it. The rope ends may have a permanent twist so as to twine one on the other naturally and keep the sling from falling off the goods. By the use of such slings, goods can be transferred in several operations, for example from a ship to a warehouse and thence to a vehicle, without the slings being removed.
