Abstract

SO2 is removed from an oxygen-containing gas mixture by contact above 300 DEG C. with a redox catalyst consisting of copper oxide on a carrier. In examples flue gas containing CO2, O2, N2, H2O and SO2 is passed through a tubular reactor at 410 DEG C. SO2 is removed and the spent catalyst containing Cu2S and CuSO4 is regenerated at 430 DEG C. in a methane atmosphere. The copper catalysts may be promoted with Pd and/or Cr and/or Ag, and stabilized with BaO. The redox reactions may be summarized by the equations: CuO + SO2 + 1/2 O2--> CuSO4 reduction CuSO4 --> CuO + Cu2O + Cu + Cu2S Cu2O + 1/2 O2 --> 2CuO Cu + 1/2 O2 --> CuO Cu2S + 2 1/2 O2 --> CuO + CuSo4.ALSO:Redox catalysts for removing SO2 from gaseous mixtures containing O2 comprise copper oxide on a carrier. Preferred carriers are Al2O3, SiO2, Al2O3, -SiO2, SiO2, -MgO on mixtures. Specified promoters are Cr2O3 and/or Pd and/or Ag. The catalyst may be stabilised with BaO. The catalyst carrier may have a surface area of at least 100m2/gm. An example describes CuO, Cr2O3, Ag and Pd or Al2O3. Pore volume data for carriers is also disclosed.
