Abstract

A glass-ceramic article is made by forming the article in glass including essentially in per cent by weight: SiO2, 40.0-70.0; CaO, 7.5-37.5; Na2O, 4.0-14.0; Al2O3, 1.0-10.0; P2O5, 0.5-12.5; F2, 0.1-2.5, the balance, if any, consisting of other compatible constituents. The glass may also include: B2O3, 0-2%; and MgO, SrO, BaO, ZnO, CdO and/or PbO totalling 0-3.0%. Usual impurities may be present, as may refining agents, e.g. cerium oxide. The article is then subjected to a heat-treatment including a step in which it is heated at \sO 10 DEG C/min. to 150 DEG -250 DEG C. above the dilatometric softening point, (Mg point), and is held in this temperature range until a major proportion of the glass is devitrified. The heat-treatment may be a one, two, or three stage process: in the three-stage process the temperature is (i) raised between 150 DEG C. below and 50 DEG C. above the Mg point; (ii) held; (iii) raised to not more than 150 DEG C. above the Mg point; (iv) held; (v) raised to 150-250 DEG C. above the Mg point; (vi) held; (vii) reduced to room temperature. In all the temperature-change steps, the rate is \sO 10 DEG C/min. In the two-stage process, only steps (iii)-(vii) are performed, and in the single-stage process, only steps (v)-(vii) are performed.
