Abstract

1,088,985. Castors. BRITISH CASTORS Ltd. Oct. 21, 1964 [July 29, 1963], No. 29904/63. Heading A4U. [Also in Division B8] A self-aligning castor comprises a wheel fork 13 swivelably mounted on a stub shaft 18 carried by an attachment plate 15 and includes a first bearing 16 for receiving the working load and a second, smaller bearing 17 which supports the weight of the castor when the latter is lifted clear of the ground. The centre of gravity of the wheel and fork assembly is off-set from the swivel axis of the stub shaft 18. The attachment plate 15 may be secured to the pallet or other supported article such that the swivel axis is inclined to the vertical so that when the castor is raised it centres under its own weight. Alternatively, the swivel axis may be vertical in which case either the castor is spring urged to its aligned position or the supported article is tilted as it is raised thereby to tilt the swivel axis. The bearings 16, 17 may, as shown, comprise balls which bear on opposite sides of the top of the fork 13 or of the attachment plate 15.
