Abstract

1,087,917. Photo-electric cells. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 11, 1965 [Feb. 14, 1964], No. 5984/65. Heading H1K. A photo-cell consists of a pressed and sintered mass of cadmium sulphide provided with electrodes and including balanced concentrations of activators and co-activators and a total of at least 10<SP>-5</SP> atoms per CdS molecule of an element or elements chosen from lead, potassium, barium, strontium, calcium and magnesium. If lead is the selected element the preferred amount is between 5 x 10<SP>-4</SP> and 10<SP>-2</SP> atoms, otherwise it is from 10<SP>-3</SP> to 10<SP>-5</SP>. Typical cells are prepared from 100 gram batches of pure cadmium sulphide to each of which quantities of nitrate solutions giving gallium and copper concentrations of 2À85 and 3 x 10<SP>-4</SP> atoms/ molecule respectively are added. Solutions of nitrates of the various additives are added to different batches to give additive concentrations of 10<SP>-4</SP> atoms/molecule, and in the case of lead between 10<SP>-4</SP> and 10<SP>-3</SP>. After mixing and prolonged drying at 120‹ C. the batches are heated at 850‹ C. for 3 hours in hydrogen sulphide and nitrogen and then ground up. Each batch is mixed with 1 gram of cadmium oxide or the equivalent amount of an oxide yielding salt, pressed into plates, and sintered at 950‹ C. in nitrogen. Interdigitated electrodes of goldindium are evaporated on each plate which is then placed in a flat silicone grease-filled glass envelope sealed off with epoxy resin. The cells switch on and off faster than cells formed without the additives but have lower sensitivity. The effects are most pronounced at high levels of illumination when lead is the additive.
