Abstract
Trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene are made by reacting 1,2-dichloroethane and/or 1,1, 2-trichloroethane with chlorine in the vapour phase at 350-450 DEG C. in the absence of a chlorination catalyst and in the presence of chlorination catalyst and in the presence of elemental oxygen or an elemental oxygen-containing gas in an amount of 0.2-3.0% v/v. of oxygen with respect to chlorine. The reaction may be effected in a fluidized bed of an inert material, e.g. sand. The amount of chlorine used depends upon the starting materials and generally lies in the range 0.7 to 2.0 moles per mole of chlorinated ethane. In the examples, small amounts of monochloroethane, carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethane and pentachloroethane are obtained as by-products.
