Abstract
H3PO4 is prepared by reacting phosphate rock with H2SO4 in a cascade of vessels, recycling the major part of the product and mixing it with the phosphate rock in the first vessel of the cascade, and introducing the major part of the H2SO4 into the second vessel and the remainder into the first. The non-recycled part of the product may have phosphate rock added thereto, and may then be filtered and the cake washed with H2O and/or dilute H3PO4 which may be recycled to the first vessel. The filtrate, to which may be added pre-formed gypsum crystals, may be matured, at a temperature below that of the reaction, while being agitated, e.g. by blowing air therethrough. The proportion of H2SO4 in the first vessel may be 0.5-4% by wt. Sand or other siliceous material may be added to the phosphate rock or to the first vessel.
