Abstract
Textile sheet material is treated by a method including in combination the steps of first treating the material to impart localised disturbance in the configuration of the components of the sheet in space and subsequently applying an elastomer or elastomer forming compound to a number of preselected randomly or uniformly distributed discrete areas on one or both faces of the sheet, said steps being carried out under such conditions that the localised disturbances in the configuration of the components of the sheet in space reform after the sheet is deformed to remove such disturbances and allowed to recover. The textile sheet material may comprise a sheet in woven, knitted, netted or likewise fabricated form formed from any natural or artificial fibre. In Example 1 a plain weave fabric of linen yarn having virtually no stretch properties is treated to increase the crimp in the weft threads and the sheet is printed on one face with a polyurethane resin by passing the fabric over a roller coated with the resin to provide 'bridges' of elastomer between a substantial proportion of all adjacent peaks of weft threads, whereby the sheet is given stretch properties in the direction of the weft threads. In Example 2 a plain weave fabric of linen yarn is stretched in the warp direction to produce a reduction of dimension in the other direction, then printed with polyurethane resin on one face over localised areas which define a regular pattern, e.g. spaced strips parallel to the weft threads and subsequently stretched in said other direction, whereby the sheet is given a puckered relief surface.
