Abstract

1,086,451. Strengthening edges. C. J. BROADHURST. Jan. 4, 1966 [Jan. 7, 1965], No. 733/65. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B6] Sheets having filing perforations along the edges for use in loose leaf binders &c. are strengthened at the perforations against tearing by the application into the perforations of a solution or dispersion of an agent which, when deposited, will form a coating or film which when dry is not sticky. The agent could be a thermoplastic resin dissolved in a volatile solvent, and examples include a polymer or mixtures of polymers of an acrylic or methacrylic ester dissolved in toluene. The agent can be applied by pouring or spraying perforations already formed in a sheet or assembly of sheets, or sheets in web form. In one example, the liquid agent may be transferred to a perforating tool by a felt pad, and deposited in the perforations during the perforating process.
