Abstract
An unfired basic refractory brick comprises magnesia, or magnesia and chromite, with a bond based on magnesia cement or waste sulphite liquor, and 0.5-1.2% by wt. boron compounds calculated as B2O3 which have been added as such to the refractory batch, in the absence of water-soluble chromium compounds. The bond may be formed from magnesium sulphate or the magnesium salt of ligninsulphonic acid. Boron compounds added "as such" denotes compounds introduced into the refractory batch as opposed to those present in the refractory starting material from the first, e.g. because they were added as sintering agents in the cause of making sintered magnesia. An unfired magnesia brick comprising 70% granular sintered magnesia (up to 3 mm.), 30% finely ground sintered magnesia, 0.8% kieserite or waste sulphite liquor and 0.6% boron compounds, calculated as B2O3, is specified.
