Abstract
Ethylenically unsaturated compounds are polymerized without precautions to remove or exclude atmospheric oxygen, using a catalyst system comprising a halogenated organic compound and a transition metal carbonyl in conjunction with an organic phosphine. The carbonyl and phosphine are preferably used as a preformed complex. The Specification contains lists of monomers, transition metal carbonyls, and organic phosphines. The exemplified monomer is methyl methacrylate and the exemplified catalysts are CCl4 and complex of the formula Ni2(CO)6P2#f4, Mo2(CO)8P2Me2, Fe2(CO)5P3Me#f3, Mo(CO)5(P#f)3, and a mixture of Mo(CO)6, P#f3, and CCl4. The polymerization may be aided photochemically.ALSO:Preparations of complexes of transition metal carbonyls with organic phosphines are described. In particular, (1) Ni2(CO)6P2#f4 from Ni(CO)4 and P#f2.P#f2, (2) Mo2(CO)8P2Me2 from Mo(CO)6 and P2Me4, (3) Fe2(CO)5P3Me2#f3 by reacting P#f3 with the reaction product of Fe(CO)5 and P2Me4 in a hydrocarbon solvent, in u./v. light or visible light for several days, (4) Mo(CO)5.P#f3 from Mo(CO)6 and P#f3. The Specification contains probable structural formula for the complexes. The metal carbonyls include part carbonyls, e.g. metal carbonyl halides and metal cyclopentadienyl carbonyls.
