Abstract

A lubricating composition comprises a major portion of a lubricating oil and a minor portion of an oil-soluble chromate or molybdate salt of the reaction product of a long-chain substituted succinic acid or anhydride with a di- or polyamino compound containing at least one primary amino group, said long-chain substituent being a hydrocarbon group having a molecular weight of at least 700 and said reaction product containing at least one basic nitrogen group. The long-chain substituted succinic anhydride may be obtained by reacting a normally liquid oil-soluble polyolefine having a molecular weight of 700 to 3000 with maleic anhydride. The di- or polyamino compounds may have the formula <FORM:1085903/C4-C5/1> where R is H or an alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms and "n" is an integer of 1 to 8 or more. Amines such as N-amino alkyl piperazines, N-dialkyl amino alkyl amines and the reaction products of polyalkylene polyamines in which "n" is at least 2 with g -butyro lactone, g -valerolactone, or dicyandiamide, may also be used. The lubricating compositions may also contain copper deactivators, pour-point depressants, antioxidants, viscosity index improvers and other conventional additives. Preferred anti-oxidants are the zinc salts of dialkyl dithiophosphoric acids derived from C3 to C10 alcohols. Cold sludge dispersant properties of the chromate or molybdate salt in lubricants is tested using the sludge from a Lauson engine and a plain mineral oil free from additives such as a light spindle oil. Solutions of the salt additives in mineral oil are also tested and " Panel Coker Tests " are also carried out, the base oil being a refined mineral oil of viscosity 160 secs. Redwood I at 140 DEG F. and there being present in each case 0.9% of a mineral oil concentrate of mixed zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates derived from isopropanol and capryl alcohol. Specific lubricating oil blends exemplified are (1) mineral oil A + mineral oil B + methacrylate viscosity index improver in mineral oil + additive A + a mineral oil concentrate of a zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate derived from isopropanol and capryl alcohol + reaction product of polyisobutenyl succinimide and CrO3 and (2) as in (1) except that the chromate of the product of polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride with the reaction product of dicyandiamide with triethylene tetramine is used. Mineral oil A is a pale spindle oil of viscosity 52 Redwood secs. No. 1 at 140 DEG F., mineral oil B is a solvent refined mineral oil of viscosity 100 Redwood secs. No. 1 at 140 DEG F., additive A is the barium salt of a phosphosulphurized polyisobutylene.ALSO:An oil-soluble chromate or molybdate salt of the reaction product of a long-chain substituted succinic acid or anhydride with a di- or polyamine compound containing at least one primary amino group, said long-chain substituent being a hydrocarbon group having a molecular weight of at least 700 and said reaction product containing at least one basic nitrogen group, is obtained by heating a mixture of an oil concentrate of the succinic acid or anhydride/di- or polyamino compound reaction product together with chromic or molybdic oxide or oxide ammonium molybdate in the presence of water, at a temperature from 80 DEG to 100 DEG C. The long-chain substituted succinic anhydride may be obtained by reacting a normally liquid oil-soluble polyolefine having a molecular weight of 700 to 3000 with maleic anhydride. The di- or polyamino compounds may have the formula <FORM:1085903/C3/1> where R is H or an alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms and n is an integer of 1 to 8 or more. Alternatively amines such as N-amino alkyl piperazines and N-dialkyl amino alkyl amines may be used as well as the reaction products of polyalkylene polyamines in which n is at least 2 with g -butyro lactone, g -valerolactone, or dicyandiamide. The salts may be used as lubricating oil additives.
