Abstract
A stoving lacquer comprises a compound containing epoxy groups and/or an epoxy resin and a thermosetting butanol etherified amino-triazine-formaldehyde condensation product which is prepared from butanol, HOHO and/or a compound which yields HOHO under reaction conditions (e.g. paraformaldehyde) and an aminotriazine of general formula <FORM:1085160/C3/1> in which R is NH2, a substituted NH2 group, or an alkyl, aryl, acyl or hydroxyl group. The reactants are initially heated either individually or in admixture in the presence of weak acids and are then condensed by further heating during which any water formed is removed by cyclic distillation. 3.5 to 6.5 mols of butanol may be used per mol of aminotriazine. Either n-butanol or a 50:50 mixture of n- and isobutanol may be used. 3.5 to 6 moles of paraformaldehyde may be used per mol. of aminotriazine. From 0.5 to 5 ml of acetic acid may be used per mol of aminotriazine, to provide the weakly acidic medium. The initial reflux stage may last from 30 minutes to 5 hrs. and the cyclic distillation from 2 to 7 hrs. The resin is substantially free of uncombined HCHO. The lacquer may contain from 10-70% by weight of aminotriazine resin and 90-30% by weight of epoxy resin and/or compound containing epoxide groups. A suitable epoxy resin has an epoxy equivalent of 1550-2000 and a Duran softening point of 114-125 DEG C.
