Abstract

Semi-rigid polyurethane foams of density not more than 0.15 g./cm.3 and compressive strength 100-700 g./cm.3 are prepared from reaction mixtures containing a polyoxyalkylene polyol of functionality 2-4 and hydroxyl number 40-180, water, an aromatic polyisocyanate having not more than one isocyanate group attached to any one aromatic ring, a catalyst, a foam stabilizer, and a hydrocarbon being solids melting below 110 DEG C. or liquids boiling below 150 DEG C., and may be either polymers or petroleum fractions. Mixtures of polymers may be used subject to the condition that the mean hydroxyl number of the mixture should fall within the specified range. Preferred polyisocyanates are diphenylmethane diisocyanates, diphenyl diisocyanates, diphenylether diisocyanates, triphenylmethane triisocyanates, and the mixture obtained by condensing formaldehyde with aniline or toluidine and treating the product with phosgene. Preferred polyols have polyoxypropylene chains and hydroxyethylenoxy end groups. Preferred hydrocarbons have viscosities greater than one centistoke at 30 DEG C. Preferred catalysts are various tin soaps though tertiary amines may additionally be used and the foam stabilizer may be a silicone oil. Auxiliary blowing agents such as the volatile halocarbons and halohydrocarbons may be used. Preferred compositions contain by weight of the polyol, up to 3 parts of water 0.7-1.2 times the theoretical of the polyisocyanate, 1-15 parts of hydrocarbon, 0.5-1.5 parts by weight of tin catalyst and 0-0.1 of aliphatic tertiary amine catalysts.
