Abstract
1,084,972. Ground anchors. HARVEY ALUMINIUM (Inc.). Oct. 26, 1964, No. 43642/ 64. Heading E1B. [Also in Division F3] A tubular ground anchor B having an explodable head H and having its lower end weakened by longitudinal grooves 20 is driven into the ground by hammering on a threaded cap C, whereafter a lanyard 37 is pulled to explode a charge 26. The explosion creates an underground cavity and splits the lower end of the tube B so that it is splayed into the cavity. The cap C is then removed, the tube B is pushed down towards the bottom of the cavity, an extension sleeve is fitted, and settable fluid such as cement is poured into the tube to fill the cavity. In use a stud (60), Fig. 7 (not shown), e.g. for tying down an aircraft, gun mount, guy wire &c., is threaded into the top of tube B. Firing mechanism. The lanyard 37 is attached to a safety pin 31 and to a catch 43 engaging a spring-loaded firing pin 41. On pulling the lanyard a spring-loaded slide 32 carrying a detonator cap 36 is released and moves the cap 36 into line with the firing pin 41. Continued pulling raises pin 41 against its spring 42 until it is released by the catch'43, whereupon it strikes cap 36 and detonates the charge 26.
