Abstract

1,084,901. Fluid heaters, heat storing apparatus. TANKS & DRUMS Ltd. May 5, 1964 [Feb. 5, 1963], No. 4590/63. Headings F4A, F4S and F4U. A heat exchanger for heating water (or air) for a central heating system comprises ceramic or refractory blocks 1, 2, 3, 4 arranged in spaced relationship within a thermally insulated casing, 11, 12, the blocks having cavities 5 for water (or air) pipes or coils so arranged that hot gases from an oil or gas burner (8) may flow in one direction through the spaces 6 between the blocks while water (or air) is circulated in the opposite direction through the pipes or coils by a pump (or fan). Tlhe pump (or fan) is controlled in accordance with demand independently of the burner which is started by a time switch and switched off by either a time switch or a room thermostat, the independent control making use of the heat storage capacity of the blocks. An inspection window 14 and a flame failure detector and automatic cut-off are provided. A single burner may heat two or more heat exchangers when these are combined in a single casing to form a larger installation. Both air and water may be circulated in different pipe systems in the same apparatus for heating in the heat exchanger.
