Abstract

1,084,542. Permanent magnets. PERKINELMER Ltd. March 25, 1964 [April 1, 1963], No. 12846/63. Heading H1P. In a magnet, e.g. permanent for providing a highly homogeneous flux distribution in a working gap, the gap is defined by opposed faces of two high-permeability inserts 4 each embedded in a polepiece 2 and so supportedly spaced therein as to define a single intervening high reluctance series gap which includes an inner portion 5 substantially normal to the magnetic axis through the working gap and an outer portion 6 extending at an angle from the inner portion 5 between the outer boundary of the insert 4 and an annular part 3 of the polepiece, the two series gap portions being of different width. The insert support is effected by a non magnetic, e.g. epoxy resin, layer, and the annular part 3 is a screw ring which is adjustable to alter the spacing between the two such rings and, in the embodiment shown, the width of the gap outer portion 6.
