Abstract
1,084,472. Travelling wave tubes. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Nov. 4, 1965 [Nov. 18, 1964], No. 46743/65. Heading H1D. The periodic focusing system of a travelling wave tube has a portion of modified construction at the collector end, to provide a change in the pass band structure of the system, such that the electron beam is transmitted in the first pass band of the first portion of the system, but at the lower edge of the second pass band of the second portion, whereby in the second portion slow electrons which would otherwise extract energy from the signal wave, are defocused and collected on the slow wave structure. The final few periods of the second portion may exhibit a further change of periodicity or of peak field strength, to improve the focusing of the transmitted fast electrons. Application to periodic permanent magnet, electrostatic, and quadrupolar magnetic focusing arrangements is referred to.
