[Also in Division D1] In an apparatus for obtaining aquatic data from an aircraft towed probe within a body of water, at least a portion of the towing cable is elastic so that stretching of the cable during movement of the aircraft accelerates the probe out of the water and to a second location. The probe comprises an elongated body 10 portion, at least two brake plates 26 pivoted to said body portion and normally flush therewith, an axially slidable nose piece 42, and a connecting member 40 between the nose piece and the brake plates whereby movement of the nose piece towards said body on impact of the nose piece with the water pivots said brake plates away from the body portion.
