Abstract
1,083,363. Electro-static developing apparatus. HITACHI Ltd. Jan. 28, 1965 [Jan. 30, 1964], No. 3892/65. Headings G2H and G3R. Apparatus for dry powder development of electro-static images comprises a rotating magnetic brush 4 in contact with the surface of a moving web 14 on which electro-static images are formed, and a rotating insulated brush 5 of fine metal wires on an insulated hub 7, the brush 5 being in deep intersection with the magnetic brush and mostly immersed in reservoir 9 of a developer powder consisting of a mixture of iron-powder carrier and a toner powder which may be a polymer derived from styrene and/or its homologues. Brush 4 is formed by ferrite permanent bar or arcuate magnets 1 on a non- magnetic hexagonal bar 3. The iron powder and toner are charged to opposite electro-static polarities by the rotation of brush 5 and are mutually attracted. Excess free toner is removed from the magnetically saturated brush 4, formed of iron powder, by brush 5. Fresh toner is supplied from store 10 in which it is agitated and charged by brushes 12 to prevent coagulation, and is fed in controlled amounts by brush 13 to reservoir 9. As shown, two intersecting brushes 5 are used with separate magnetic brushes 4. The level of toner is observed through the transparent wall of store 10. Image density control is carried out by measuring the light reflected from brush 4 with a transducer whose output is amplified and fed to a device which controls the speed of rotation of brushes 4 and 5.
