Abstract

Sour hydrocarbons, containing organic mercaptans of the general formula RSH, are sweetened by contacting, preferably at above 120 DEG F., with particles of a macroporous sulphonic acid ion exchange resin in the Cu++ form, thereby converting the mercaptans in part into CuSR and in part into RSSR, and thereafter separating the hydrocarbon and the resin. The resin may be regenerated by passage of steam at 225-250 DEG F. under vacuum.
