Abstract
1,083,129. Rolling and straightening. MATERIALS RESEARCH LABORATORY Inc. Dec. 22, 1964, No. 52064/64. Headings B3E and B3M. A back-up roll 14 comprises gear-teeth in its circumference intermediate its ends. A metal sheet 10 is moved between the rolls 12 while rack members 18 are moved at the same speed to rotate the back-up rolls 14. (Alternatively, the rolls could be moved over the sheet). In a modification, the back-up rolls (26), Fig. 5 (not shown), are engaged by a toothed roll (24). The teeth on the rolls can be continuous or formed at intervals. In a reducing mill, there are only two work rolls 48, Fig. 8. Similar backup rolls can be provided in levelling or materialhandling machines.
