Abstract

A reflex-reflecting shield mounted in a sealed beam lamp comprises a base plate, preferably of a malleable and ductile metal such as aluminium, at least one surface of which consists of glass beads firmly and partially embedded in the plate or bonded thereto with a glass enamel. Preferably the beads consist of: .43.5%.by weight of TiO2 .29.3%.by weight of BaO .14.3%.by weight of SiO2 .8.38%.by weight of Na2O .3.06%.by weight of B2O3 .1.44%.by weight of K2O and are bonded to the aluminium plate by coating the latter with an enamel slip and firing at 600 DEG C. for 5 minutes. The slip may consist of: .4.56.parts by weight of calcium silicate .3.44.parts by weight of boric acid .1.part by weight of pigment grade TiO2 .100.parts by weight of glass frit .45.parts by weight of water the glass frit consisting of: .15.6.mole per cent TiO2 .38.1.mole per cent SiO2 .1.1.mole per cent P2O5 .0.6.mole per cent Sb2O3 .4.7.mole per cent B2O3 .1.9.mole per cent ZnO .3.1.mole per cent CdO .0.6.mole per cent SrO .9.5.mole per cent K2O .17.1.mole per cent Na2O .7.7.mole per cent Li2O Before they are secured to the plate the beads are silvered, coated with hydrated alumina, and heated at 500 DEG C. to convert the coating to a highly porous solid composed of interlocking fibrils of gamma alumina. They may then be passed through a 6% aqueous dispersion of a fluorocarbon compound and dried at 300 DEG F., or subjected to some other surface treatment, e.g. silicone treatment. After firing, the silver and coating are removed by etching from the exposed portions of the beads. Instead of being bonded to the plate, the beads may be embedded therein by the method described in Specification 1,081,601.
