Abstract
Rare-earth suboxides (of La, Pr, Pm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu and Y) which are oxygen-deficient relative to the sesquioxide, are dark-coloured, highly magnetic, and electrically semi-conducting. The following have been prepared: GdO1.495, ErO1.489, HoO1.490, LuO1.465, YO1.491. Their resistivity can be lowered by the incorporation of conducting metals, e.g. Ag, Cu. Incorporation (e.g. of copper or silver oxalate) may be combined with the production of the suboxides. Preparation is by partial decomposition of higher oxides in a high vacuum, e.g. 5x10-6 torr. or reducing atmosphere at elevated temperatures or by arc-melting or furnace-heating at 2250-2500 DEG C. a mixture of the sesquioxide and a metal, e.g. same rare-earth as suboxide to be prepared, another rare-earth or iron, copper or nickel. Excess metal is then dissolved by hydrochloric acid. Alternatives are the vacuum-heating of compacted sesquioxide-hydride mixture at 800 DEG C. then heating at 2000 DEG C. in argon, and drying a mixture of the oxalate and another oxalate at 200 DEG C. in He, heating to 300 DEG C. in He, and to 1400 DEG C. in H2. These suboxides may be used in the microwave field and for magnetic cores, as semi-conductors, thermoelectric generators and as elements in lasers.
