Abstract

Strong, heavy-duty detergent tablets having a fast dissolving rate are made by pressing into tablets having a bulk density of 0.8-1.3 gm./c.c. a formulation comprising:- (a) 35-65 wt. per cent of compacted sodium tripolyphosphate having a bulk density of 1.0-1.25 gm./c.c. and a hydration time of less than 3 minutes; (b) 5-15 wt. per cent of a water-soluble anionic or non-ionic synthetic detergent; (c) 3-15 wt. per cent of sodium silicate; (d) extenders and auxiliary compounds to provide the balance. Many conventional detergents may be used as ingredient (b), these being extensively exemplified. Component (d) can include sodium sulphate, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, and lauroyl diethanolamide. The tablets may be steamed to cause hydration of their surfaces, which helps to prevent fracturing during handling.
