Abstract

1,082,012. Protective layers. KODAK Ltd. July 28, 1965 [May 23, 1964], No.21405/64. Heading G2C. A hydrophilic colloid silver halide emulsion layer for use as a protective matte layer either coated on the front or the back of a photographic light-sensitive material comprising a supported gelatino silver halide emulsion layer with a hydrophilic backing layer is obtained by precipitating the silver halide grains of said protective layer from a water-soluble silver salt and a watersoluble halide in the presence of a bismuth salt so that the grains are virtually insensitive to light compared with the photographic material on which they are coated. Athallium salt may also be present during the precipitation and produces spherical grains of mean grain diameter at least 0À5Á. If the photographic material is a colour material the protective layer must be fogged e.g. by sulphur compounds, ammonia and excess silver nitrate, alkaline formalin or thiourea dioxide and the silver grains of the protective layer are silver chloride.
