Abstract

An agent for deinking waste paper comprises an aqueous solution having a pH of from 7.0 to 10.0 and containing a non-ionic surface-active agent and a polyol. The surface-active agent is of the formula R-(-CHR1-CHR2-O-)n-H where R is the aryloxy residue of an alkylphenol in which the total number of carbon atoms is between 7 and 30, R1 and R2 are each hydrogen or alkyl, and n is from 2 to 100; examples are the ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and butylene oxide adducts of nonylphenol and dodecylphenol. The polyol is a compound having more than one hydroxyl group, each of which is attached to a separate carbon atom of an aliphatic skeleton; examples are glycols, glycerol, pentaerythritol, trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane, 1,2,6-hexantriol, sorbitol, isositol and mixtures of these. An alkali or alkaline salt may also be present; examples are sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide and soda ash.
