Abstract

1,081,602. Controlling two or more engines. TASMAN MANUFACTURING CO. Ltd. Sept. 11, 1964 [Nov. 26, 1963], No. 37283/64. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F1] In a mechanism for inter-connecting the throttles of multi-engined vehicles in which a foot pedal assembly 1, Fig. 1, controls throttle 4 of one engine and throttle 5, Fig. 2, of the remaining engine or engines, the setting of a hand lever (not shown) pre-determines the operative position of throttle 5, the initial movement of the foot pedal brings the throttles to their predetermined setting and the remaining engine or engines return to their idle condition only when the foot pedal is fully released. The foot pedal assembly may consist of two subpedals independently mounted adjacent each other on a common axis. Foot pedal 1 moves throttle 4 through an hydraulic, sheathed cable, pneumatic or linkage connection 3, the initial part of pedal movement closing a microswitch 2. Current is thereby directed, to a multi-position switch 10 which directs current to terminals 11 and tappings 9 on a solenoid winding 7. The setting of switch 10 is adjusted by the hand lever to give a desired movement of armature 3. When applied to a two-engined vehicle the forward engine has a manually-operated gearbox and the rear engine has an automatic gearbox. The forward engine may be that of a lorry and the rear engine that of a trailer or articulated trailer. Alternatively the rearward engine may be mounted on a sub-frame which may be secured to a vehicle to drive any of its wheels.
