Abstract

Textile materials, e.g. filaments, fibres, tows and yarns, comprising at least a proportion of fibres made from a polyester derived from terephthalic acid or from a polyolefine are rendered antistatic by treating them with 0.05-0.5% of a polyalkenoxy agent obtained by condensing ethylene and/or propylene oxide with a linear or branched chain saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic carboxy, amido, amino, hydroxy, or mercapto compound in which the aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic residue contains at least 8 carbon atoms and may be further substituted by hydroxyl, thiol, ether, thioether or amino groups and further reacted with a linear or branched chain saturated or unsaturated aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or araliphatic carboxylic acid, and 0.001-0.05% of a corrosion inhibiting salt having the formula [Mp+]q[Xq-]p in which cation M+ is derived from a metallic element forming ionic salts, preferably lithium, sodium or potassium, X- is a nitrite, carbonate, bicarbonate, tetraborate, orthophosphate, chromate, benzoate or silicate anion and p and q are integers corresponding to the valencies of the cation and anion respectively, each quantity being based on the weight of the textile materials. The polyalkenoxy agent and corrosion inhibiting salt may be applied to the textile materials from the same solution or dispersion or from separate solutions or dispersions in separate stages. In the manufacture of cold-drawable fibres when the filaments from which the fibres are made are drawn to at least twice their length, the polyalkenoxy agent may be applied in an aqueous bath on a draw frame before drawing the filaments at least twice their length, the corrosion inhibiting salt being applied subsequently or after drawing but before cutting into staple length fibres. The solutions or dispersions may be applied by padding, from a rotating wheel dipping into them, by immersion or by jet or spray.
