Abstract
1,080,265. Electric arc furnaces. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 23, 1965 [Feb. 4, 1965], No. 4869/65. Heading H5H. A top charged electric arc melting furnace in which the minimum lengths of the electrode leads are determined only by the vertical movement of the electrodes comprises a furnace vessel 11 and a transformer housing 14, movable in a horizontal plane with respect to the vessel, supporting electrodes 12 and the furnace roof 17. The electrodes, held by clamps, are moved by hoists 15 and connected to the transformer by symmetrical closely coupled flexible leads 13. Supply leads to the transformer are also flexible and located in a protective duct 18. During charging the roof is moved over a thermal shield 19 by lifting gear 16 attached to the housing. The vessel may be tilted forwards or backwards for tapping, pouring or slagging. To permit this movement either the electrodes swivel on their clamps, the housing tilts with the furnace or the electrode parts are sufficiently large. The transformer roof and electrode clamps are water cooled. The vessel may be elliptic or oval with multi-phase multiple electrodes as described in Specification 974,444. Supplementary reactors may be connected in series with the furnace transformer when using a tap change auto-transformer.
