Abstract

107,937. Ames, R. Feb. 25, 1917. Aerating.-In apparatus for aerating sewage &c., a travelling carriage 45 moving on rails 47 on opposite sides of the tank carries an horizontal air-pipe from which depend a number of vertical air-pipes 50 terminating in diffusers 51, and a flexible air-pipe 56 winds on and off a drum 70 mounted on the carriage and connected by chain gearing with one of the wheels 46 of the carriage. The pipe 56 is connected to a pipe inside the drum 70 which conducts air through the hollow axle of the drum to the horizontal pipe. The carriage may be reciprocated by an air turbine or an electric motor mounted upon it, or by a rope 63 operated by winding-gear 38 automatically reversed by gearing 64 controlled by projections on the rope. Additional aeration is effected by a pipe 44 situated as shown in an inverted U-pipe 43 that delivers sewage into the tank. The diffusers comprise hollow metal casings 5, Fig. 5, formed in halves secured together by bolts 9 and enclosing porous blocks 7 or equivalent wire-gauze or fabric situated in apertures in the casing. Stay-wires 81 support the diffusers and are tensioned by rods 52 slidable vertically on the pipes 50.
