Abstract

A process of metal plating a synthetic plastics material comprises the following steps: (1) Cleaning the surface with an alkaline oxidizing cleaner (preferably non-silicated). (2) Etching with a bath which includes sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid and chromic acid. The chromic acid constituent may be initially in the form of commercial flake CrO3. (3) Sensitizing the surface with stannous chloride followed by activation with a solution containing a noble metal salt (e.g. PdCl2). Alternatively, the method of Specification 929, 799 may be used as a single step sensitizer-activator. (4) Electroless plating by depositing copper, nickel or silver by chemical reduction. (5) Electroplating in a conventional copper plating solution of the acid sulphate, fluoborate, or sulphanate type, or of the alkaline pyrophosphate type. (6) Final plating with nickel-chromium or nickel-gold. Examples of plastics to which the method is applied are vinyl, styrene, butadiene, and acrylic polymers, polystyrenes, and phenol formaldehyde resins.
