Abstract

1,079,047. Laminates. FORMICA INTERNATIONAL Ltd. Aug. 13, 1965 [Aug. 28, 1964], No. 35367/64. Heading B5N. A laminated metal-plastics sheet which on being deformed from its original shape by an external force is held in the deformed shape upon the removal of the external force, and against the restoring forces exerted by the plastics constituent, by the metal constituent, comprises a resilient fibrous sheet coated or impregnated with a synthetic resin, adhesively bonded to at least one flexible metal sheet of substantially the same area and having a thickness of 0.005 to 10 times the thickness of the resilient sheet is made by contacting the sheets and curing the synthetic resin under elevated temperature and pressure. An apparatus comprising means 6 for continuously treating at least one web of fibrous material with a synthetic resin, means 17 for supplying one or more webs of metal foil 16 in the direction of travel of said fibrous web(s); means 11 and 12 for contacting the webs in such a manner that upon application of heat and pressure a unitary product is obtained and means 14 for applying a covering film 13 to an external surface of the assembly prior to the application of heat and pressure. A series of the resilient sheets may be bonded to a series of the metal sheets in alternating arrangement or in a non-regular manner. The resilient sheet is preferably a decorated paper sheet. Specified synthetic resins are phenol-, urea-, melamine- or modified melamine-formaldehyde resins, polyesters, polyepoxides, vinyl resins, acrylic resins or mixtures thereof. Specified metal sheets are those of aluminium, lead, zinc, copper, brass, nickel, indium or gallium or alloys thereof. The metal foils may be coated, e.g. by oxides or be surface activated e.g. by chemical or mechanical etching prior to lamination. The exposed metal surface of the laminate may be bonded to substrate, e.g. by an impact or pressure-sensitive adhesive which is preferably provided with a removable backing.
