Abstract

1,078,514. Cables. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 28, 1964 [May 16, 1963], No. 19524/63. Heading H1A. In a high voltage cable a resilient, conductive layer comprising a strip of cellular material (such as an expanded or foamed synthetic polymer) loaded with carbon black, metal powder or like conductive particles, is lapped on to or folded around the stranded core of the cable to prevent electrical discharge in and subsequent breakdown of the insulation due to surface irregularities in the core and stresses in the insulation. The resiliency of the layer evens out and cushions the radial stresses introduced in the insulation during the lapping of the paper or synthetic film tape comprising the insulation and makes the cable less susceptible to damage by bending. The use of a strip for the layer permits penetration of any oil or gas impregnant used. An extruded lead sheath encloses the insulation and has an external waterproof layer of serving.
