Abstract
1,078,431. Irradiation apparatus. NUCLEAR ENGINEERING Ltd. April 10, 1964 [April 10, 1963], No. 14466/63. Heading H5R. In an irradiation unit, the radiation source or sources are disposed permanently in an irradiation chamber 13 within a shielding mass 12, articles to be irradiated being conveyed to the chamber through a tunnel 14 which follows a path which is, for example, curved, so that radiation cannot escape outside the shielding mass. The shielding mass 12 may be of concrete and the tunnel of any desired cross-section, e.g. rectangular and circular in plan. Objects for irradiation are loaded on to a circular carriage at an access point 15 in the shielding, and carried round to irradiation chamber 13. Shielding blocks 17 are fitted at various positions along the length of the carriage, to attenuate any radiation passing along the tunnel, the areas between the blocks providing space for the articles to be irradiated. The tunnel may be polygonal or an unclosed loop. Tubes may be provided through the tunnel for the irradiation of liquids and gases.
