Abstract
1,077,425. Coaxial cables. UNITED-CARR Inc. March 8, 1965 [May 21, 1964], No. 9779/65. Heading H1A. A coaxial cable for micro-waves has a central conductor 10, an insulating sheath 12 of a synthetic plastics formed with a series of outer annular spaced grooves 14 and coating 16 of electrically conducting material. This arrangement allows flexing of the cable without damage to the outer conductor. The plastics material may be P.T.F.E., polypropylene or a co-polymer of tetrafluorethylene and hexafluorpropylene. The plastics material is prepared for the outer material by etching it to make its surface hydrophilic sensitizing it, which consists in having the sheath absorb a readily oxidizable material, and catalysing it by exposing the absorbed material to the ions of a noble metal which is readily reduced on to the surface. After preparation, the surface is first given a very thin coating of silver followed by a coating of copper. The sides of the grooves may be parallel and the grooves deepened to increase flexibility.
