Abstract

A reactive moulding composition comprises a granular refractory material mixed or coated with a phenolic novolak resin in which the phenolic nuclei are linked together predominantly through their ring positions ortho to the phenolic hydroxyl group and a curing agent for the phenolic resin. The curing agent is preferably hexamethylenetetramine and suitable refractory materials are sand, zircon, quartz, alumina and carborundum. A mould release agent such as wax, plumbago or graphite may also be added to the composition. The composition may be prepared by heating the granular refractory material to between 120 DEG C. and 160 DEG C., adding the said phenol novolak resin and mixing until substantially homogeneous, adding a curing agent for the phenolic resin and cooling the mixture so formed by the addition of water while still mixing and while the phenolic resin is still fusible. The composition may be moulded to form shell moulds or cores. Phenolic novolaks in which the nuclei are united through the positions ortho to the phenolic hydroxyl group may be prepared by reacting 1 molecular proportion of phenol with preferably 0.6-0.7 molecular proportion of formaldehyde in the presence of a catalyst such as zinc borate, zinc acetate, zinc benzoate and cadmium acetate.
