Abstract

A fluxless arc welding electrode for use without flux or shielding gas has the following composition:- .up to 0.3% C. .0.3 -.2.4% Mn .0 -.1.2 % Si .0.2 -.5% strong deoxidant .0.001 -.0.5% B and/or .0.01 -.0.1% Na and/or K .balance substantially Fe,. the strong deoxidant consisting of at least 0.1% Al and the balance being Al, Mg, Ti or Zr or a mixture thereof. The electrode may be in the form of a 0.064" diameter core of rimming quality mild-steel or of a mild-steel containing 1.2% Mn, 0.9% Si, 0.08% C having a coating of thickness 0.001" applied by dipping and consisting of one of the following alloys in percentages by weight ..1.2.3.4.5.6 .Al.72.63.5.63.1.63.7.84.94.9 .Mn.20.21.2.21.7.20.8.10.5.- .Si.0.1.6.9.6.5.6.9.0.1.4.9 .Cu.1.5.1.9.1.9.1.9.2.- .B.5.8.5.9.5.9.5.9.2.8.- .Fe.0.6.0.6.0.6.0.6.0.3.- .Ti.-.-.0.3.-.-.- .Na.-.-.-.0.2.0.3.- .K.-.-.-.-.-.0.2
