Abstract

The electrolytic deposit of hydrated chromium oxide formed by deposition from a chromic acid electrolyte on a metal surface is made corrosion resistant by treating the still wet coated metal after rinsing in an aqueous solution containing a total of 1 to 100 grams per litre of at least one water soluble compound selected from alkanol amines, alkyl amines, aromatic amines, polyalkylene polyamines, hydrazine and its alkyl derivatives and alkali metal salts of amino-carboxylic acids. The metal is rinsed and then dried. Preferably the treatment solution is at 30 to 70 DEG C. and immersion lasts for 1 to 60 seconds. The treatment may be applied to iron, steel, aluminium, chromium, nickel, zinc, tin and their alloys. Examples of chromating bath compositions and conditions and examples of suitable amine compounds and immersion baths are given.
