Abstract
1,076,068. Brightening fibres and films. CIBA Ltd. Sept. 8, 1965 [Sept. 15, 1964], No. 38427/65. Heading B5B. In the manufacture of shaped products from regenerated cellulose, a solution of an optical brightener in an emulsifier is added to the viscose rayon spinning mass. The brightener solution may also contain a fatty acid of 12 to 22 carbon atoms or a salt thereof, and may be prepared with the aid of an organic solvent, such as dioxane or cyclohexanone, which may or may not be subsequently removed by distillation. Specified optical brighteners are dibenzoxazolyl - thiophenes, 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- di - triazinylaminostilbene - 2,2<SP>1</SP> - disulphonic acids further substituted on the triazine rings, coumarins, and 1,4 - distyrylbenzenes. Specified emulsifiers, which are advantageously non-ionic, include polyglycol compounds, obtained by reaction of ethylene oxide with higher alcohols, paraalkylphenols, or alkylmercaptans. Reaction products of ethylene oxide, fatty acids and hydroxyalkylamines are also specified. The brightener solution may be added to the viscose or to the alkali cellulose before sulphidation. The brightening effects may be enhanced by subsequently bleaching the spun material with peroxide or hypochlorite.
